Model- and Scriptcollections

Published: 26.10.2025

Povray is only used by a few programmers worldwide, so sources for finished models and scripts are quite limited. But they do exist, the large and small collections, you just have to find and test them.

Further websites are welcome to be reported. Of course, this also applies to own creations, although I would put general Povrayer websites and profiles on another page.

Big Collections

Lohmüller
One of the most impressive collections has been put on the web by esteemed Friedrich Lohmüller. He has already died, but his website continues to be run by povray.org.
The models are cleanly constructed, most of them only with the help of simple geometric objects, and can all be executed with version 3.7. I will reprocess some of them and publish them optimized for my purposes. Everything that drives or flies has done it to me.

Povworld
Mostly offers short, user-uploaded scripts that generate models of different kinds, including some really elaborate ones.
Although the list was last maintained in 2003, all scripts are accessible, there are no dead links. Especially the short scripts are mostly executable or can be made executable with little work. Some larger models require more time, but a hint on how something can be made is enough to learn. Or at least they offer a starting point so that you don't have to start from scratch.

Big Packages

LUNEX
The LUNEX package from Jay Tanner creates realistic views of the moon. At different sun positions, from different directions, for visible light or as an altitude profile. It contains all the necessary and very high-resolution images, weighs over 500 MB and you have to invest an hour before you can exploit its potential, but it's worth the time.
His website is not the clearest, I think (guess October 2025) the most up-to-date version is hidden in the Download section behind the button Full LUNEX v2 Beta + All Maps. If the first link doesn't work anymore, try it via the main page.

Small Collections

Rune Skovbo Johansen
Various textures (grass, sky, metal) and a handful of macros for different purposes. His particle system sounds very interesting, the campfire looks really good in the video.

Wayback
Websites that no longer exist and whose content has been partially archived in the Wayback Machine.

Chris Colefax
Some very elaborate macro packages that serve a specific purpose: City Generator, Object Exploder, and he can even let hairs grow.

Kurt Bangert
Voyager spacecraft, Sikorski helicopter, B317, and some other stuff. Mostly hidden in scene packages that contain other interesting macros too. I have already grabbed the Boeing and will refurbish it at some point.

Object-Files
Websites on which files are not presented directly for use via Povray, but must first be converted. Examples are files with the extensions Blender, GLB, OBJ and STL. The Online-Tool from Yesbird converts these into Povray-compatible meshes.

NASA
The NASA has put hundreds of object files on the web. Models of space probes, individual components, meshes of asteroids, the entire International Space Station and much more. Some rather poor in terms of details, others extremely elaborately designed.
